The Day the Ocean Died

by Esther Davis

It must be another sign, just as Nana said. First the stars died, blackened and unseen. Then the birds died, their corpses filling the sea shores. The nations died too, somewhere in the mess. Great continents of empty homes covered the world, the elders said. If others besides our fellow islanders survived, we would never know.

Now the ocean had died…

  1. Very nice story. I have to admit I was getting a Cthulhu vibe in the middle there with the ancients awakening and such. I’m glad you proved me wrong. Reblogging.

This is a very nice story. One key component with post-apocalyptic fiction, I find, is discover. Especially when your setting is far past the end point, but even when it takes place during the breakdown. When people are struggling to rebuild, these little glimpses of the past can have huge impacts, for good or bad. I find that this author uses the theme of discovery very well.
